Mr. Jujol was a Modernista (Catalan Art Nouveau) architect, draftsman, designer and painter. He can be considered a “total artist” with a rich inner world. His marvelous mastery of color made his work unique and he was the first to use techniques like trencadís. He often assisted other architects, especially Gaudí, who respected him very much and commissioned him to add color and shape to the buildings and monuments he designed, with no limits. Admired by artistically minded people all over the world, including prestigious actor John Malkovich, the University of Tokyo founded a professorship in his honor. Jujol’s masterpieces can be found in Barcelona, Tarragona and the surrounding area, but mainly in the town of Sant Joan Despí, on the outskirts of Barcelona (a 15-minute drive from the city). Actually, he was the chief architect of Sant Joan Despí and renowned local manufacturers commissioned him to build their mansions. Torre de la Creu and Can Negre are two buildings that you can’t afford to miss: with their rounded angles, sgraffito, wall paintings and lack of stylistic limitations, they are simply awesome. A visit to the Catalan Art Nouveau Architecture Tour is a must to discover Jujol’s legacy.
